Monika Schmutz Kirgöz has been Ambassador of Switzerland to Italy, Malta and San Marino, with residence in Rome since 2021. 

 

Ambassador Schmutz Kirgöz is citizen of Basel and Chiasso (Ticino) and graduated at the University of Lausanne with a degree in political science and sociology. She then completed the Master of Advanced Studies on Development Countries (NADEL) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) and worked for several years in the field of development cooperation. 

 

In 1996 she joined the diplomatic service of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and absolved her diplomatic training in Berne and Rome. 

She then served as Spokesperson of the FDFA. 

In 2000 she was posted as head of political and cultural affairs to the Swiss Embassy in Ankara. 

In 2004 she was transferred to Rome as head of the economic, trade and finance section.

In 2007 she was sent to Tel Aviv as deputy head of mission. 

In 2011 she was appointed Consul General in Istanbul. 

From July 2017 to July 2021 Ms Schmutz Kirgöz was accredited as Ambassador of Switzerland to Lebanon. 

From September 2021 she is the Ambassador of Switzerland to Italy, Malta and San Marino, with residence in Rome.

 

Ambassador Schmutz Kirgöz’s speaks German, Italian, French, English and Turkish.

 

She is married and has two sons.
